The lead-in-matcha question has two honest answers and they point in opposite directions. Matcha does contain lead — every tea grown in soil does — and in Japanese matcha the amount is small: roughly 0.13–0.6 µg in a 2 g serving, against the 1.7–4.8 µg a typical US adult takes in from food every day. But no health authority publishes a safe level for lead, and that same serving sits right around California’s Prop 65 warning level of 0.5 µg a day. Where your matcha was grown, and whether anyone has tested it, matter more here than they would for steeped tea.
Why This Matters for Matcha
With steeped tea, most of the metal in the leaf stays in the leaf and goes in the bin. Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries measured about 8.8% of green tea’s lead transferring into the brewed infusion under its 2019 survey protocol. A Chinese study of Tieguanyin brewing measured 10.2–70.4%, varying with steep time and how acidic the water was.
Matcha skips that filter. You whisk the powdered leaf into water and drink the leaf itself, so per gram of leaf you take in roughly 3–10× the lead you would get from an infusion of the same leaf. The range is wide because the comparison depends on how that leaf would otherwise have been brewed — a single multiplier would be tidier and less true.
What the Research Shows
Geographic Differences
Japanese green tea, including matcha. The strongest public dataset is Japan’s MAFF survey of 120 Japanese green teas purchased in 2019, ten of them matcha. Lead in 77 of 120 samples was below the survey’s quantification limit of 0.10 mg/kg, and 117 of 120 were at or below 0.30 mg/kg. The highest lead value in the whole survey, 2.4 mg/kg, was a bancha rather than a matcha. The highest cadmium was 0.11 mg/kg and the highest total arsenic 0.13 mg/kg.
One caveat matters: MAFF publishes only aggregate results across all 120 samples, so the ten matcha items cannot be separated out. This is a green-tea-wide result that includes matcha, not a matcha-specific finding.
Matcha specifically. The 2026 measurements with published per-metal numbers come from commercial lab reports: three Japanese matcha powders tested at 0.067–0.071 mg/kg lead, 0.013–0.017 mg/kg cadmium and 0.021–0.068 mg/kg total arsenic. Those are real accredited-lab results, but they are vendor-published and not a random sample of the market — supporting evidence, not a survey.
The historical baseline. A 1977 analysis of 139 Japanese green teas from the 1974 national tea contest found lead of 0.11–1.93 mg/kg, mean 0.49 mg/kg, all under the 2.5 mg/kg export allowance in force at the time. Note which direction that points: the 1977 mean is higher than every Japanese measurement taken since 2019. It is a baseline from the leaded-petrol era, not evidence about tea today.
Chinese tea. The most-cited dataset is a national survey of 1,225 Chinese tea samples collected in 1999–2001. Lead ranged from below 0.2 mg/kg to 97.9 mg/kg, and 32% exceeded China’s limit at the time of 2.0 mg/kg. That figure is pooled across all tea types; the authors report that types differed significantly but publish no per-type breakdown, so a green-tea-only percentage cannot be taken from this source. Proximity to highways and surface dust were among the causes identified.
Other regions: quality varies widely. Less established tea regions may lack both the testing infrastructure and the regulatory oversight of Japan.

Why Matcha’s Leaf Starts in a Better Place
Matcha is made from tencha — young, shade-grown, first-flush leaf. Leaf age turns out to matter: in one Chinese field study, lead in young leaves ran 0.107–0.400 mg/kg against 0.560–1.265 mg/kg in mature leaves from the same area.
That is a structural advantage of the raw material, not of matcha’s preparation, and it does not carry over to the study’s own risk estimates — those were calculated for infusions, not for whole-leaf consumption.
Where Independent Testers Disagree
Two independent testers have looked at matcha and reached opposite headlines.
ConsumerLab’s green tea review, covering 30 green tea products including matcha powders, described the matcha powders as very low in lead, with nothing exceeding its limits for cadmium or arsenic.
Lead Safe Mama published third-party lab work on nine popular matcha products from 2024–2025 and reported all of them contaminated.
The measurements are compatible; the yardsticks are not. Lead Safe Mama applies a 5 ppb lead threshold — the action level proposed in the 2021 Baby Food Safety Act — across all foods. That threshold is more than an order of magnitude below the Japanese matcha values above, which themselves sit at the clean end of every government dataset. The same tin fails one test and passes the other. Knowing which threshold a verdict used is most of the story.
Putting the Risk in Perspective
Daily Exposure Context
Lead is in water pipes, soil, dust and a long list of ordinary foods. There is no threshold below which it has been established as harmless: the WHO/FAO expert committee withdrew its provisional tolerable weekly intake for lead in 2010 and concluded that no replacement figure could be set that would be health-protective. The goal is minimising exposure, not clearing a bar.
The benchmark usually quoted is the FDA’s Interim Reference Level for dietary lead — 8.8 µg/day, which FDA sets for females of childbearing age and which its own review treats as the benchmark for the general adult population, and 2.2 µg/day for children. An IRL is an exposure-reduction target, not a safety limit.
Against that, a 2 g ceremonial serving of Japanese matcha carries roughly 0.13–0.6 µg of lead — the low end using the 2026 commercial matcha figures, the high end using the 0.30 mg/kg level that all but three of the MAFF samples fell under. Average total dietary lead for US adults is 1.7–4.8 µg/day. A larger culinary or latte serving of 3–5 g scales proportionally. For scale outside tea: when Consumer Reports tested chocolate in 2023, five of seven dark chocolate bars were over California’s Prop 65 level for lead, cadmium or both at a one-ounce serving.
Cadmium and arsenic are a smaller story. The same matcha powders work out to about 0.026–0.034 µg cadmium and 0.04–0.14 µg total arsenic per 2 g serving, against Prop 65 levels of 4.1 µg/day for cadmium and 10 µg/day for inorganic arsenic.
Why a Tin Can Carry a California Warning
California’s Proposition 65 sets a Maximum Allowable Dose Level of 0.5 µg/day for lead. A 2 g matcha serving at 0.13–0.6 µg straddles it. That is the explanation for something readers hit constantly: matcha at the low end of every Japanese dataset can still arrive with a Prop 65 warning on the tin.
The warning is not a finding that a product is contaminated, and its absence is not a finding that a product is clean. Prop 65’s lead level and the FDA’s reference level differ by more than an order of magnitude because they were built for different jobs — one for reproductive-toxicity warnings on a single product, one for total dietary exposure across everything you eat. Matcha sits between the two. An article that quotes only one of them is showing you half the picture.
Who Should Be More Careful
- Pregnant and breastfeeding people — developing fetuses are more vulnerable to lead
- Children — lower body weight means higher relative exposure, and the children’s reference level is 2.2 µg/day
- Daily heavy consumers — 3+ servings per day increases cumulative exposure
- People with existing kidney conditions — cadmium accumulates in the kidneys
Individual circumstances vary more than any general figure can cover. If you are pregnant, giving matcha to a child, or managing a kidney condition or another chronic illness, talk to your doctor about your own situation rather than working from the numbers here.
How to Minimize Risk
Buy Japanese
Japanese green tea as a category measures lower and far more consistently than the Chinese material in the published surveys — 117 of 120 at or below 0.30 mg/kg on one side, a range spanning three orders of magnitude on the other. Contributing factors:
- Stricter regulatory environment
- Geographic distance from heavy industry
- Established quality control systems
- A regulator that periodically surveys the category
No published study compares heavy metal levels across Japanese growing regions, so treat a claim that Uji or Nishio or Kagoshima is cleaner than the others as marketing rather than as a finding. What does vary, and what you can check, is whether the producer tests.
Look for Lab Testing
Reputable brands share independent lab results showing heavy metal levels. Look for:
- Third-party testing (not just the company’s own lab)
- Specific numbers with units, not just “passed” claims
- Recent test dates
- Batch-specific testing when possible
- The benchmark the result is being compared against
That last point does the most work. A number with no benchmark, or one compared against a limit that does not exist, tells you very little.
Understand Organic Limitations
“Organic” certification governs what was applied to the crop, not what was already in the soil and the air. Heavy metal testing is not required for the USDA Organic seal — certifiers may test as a risk-based tool, but it is not part of the standard. When organic and conventional teas have been compared directly, researchers found no significant difference in contaminant levels.
Lead in tea comes from soil and atmospheric deposition, and soil lead persists far longer than the three-year lookback organic certification applies. Organic matcha from contaminated soil can carry just as much lead as conventional matcha.
Consider Source Transparency
Trustworthy brands typically provide:
- Specific farm or regional origin
- Harvest date
- Processing information
- Contact information for questions
Vague sourcing (“Product of Japan” with no further detail) warrants skepticism.
What About “Lead-Free” Claims?
No soil on Earth is completely lead-free, so “lead-free matcha” means “below the lab’s detection limit” — which makes the detection limit the operative number. MAFF’s was 0.10 mg/kg; a lab reporting a lower one is doing more work.
Be careful with one common formulation: “lead tested at <0.1 ppm, well below FDA limits.” The measurement half may be perfectly real. The benchmark half is not — FDA publishes no maximum or action level for lead in tea. Its finalised lead action levels cover processed food intended for babies and young children (10 ppb, or 20 ppb for dry cereals and single-ingredient root vegetables), and a separate draft guidance covers juice. Neither applies to tea, and Codex has not adopted a lead maximum for tea either.
A claim worth weighing names the metal, the number, the units, the lab, the date, and the benchmark it is being measured against. “Completely lead-free!” with nothing behind it is a slogan, not a claim.
Testing Variability
Heavy metal content isn’t static. It varies by:
- Growing season and weather conditions
- Specific field within a farm
- Processing batch
- Storage conditions and age
A clean lab test one year doesn’t predict the same result next year. The best brands test regularly across batches.
The Bottom Line
What the numbers say. A 2 g serving of Japanese matcha from a producer that tests carries roughly 0.13–0.6 µg of lead — a small share of the 1.7–4.8 µg an average US adult already takes in from food each day, well under the FDA’s 8.8 µg/day reference level, and at or around California’s 0.5 µg/day Prop 65 level. Cadmium and arsenic are far below every benchmark that applies to them.
What the numbers do not say. There is no established safe level for lead, no published matcha-specific government dataset, and a live disagreement between independent testers about which threshold to judge results by. Anyone telling you matcha is definitively fine, or definitively alarming, is running ahead of the evidence.
Where more caution is reasonable. Pregnancy, matcha for children, three or more servings a day, or matcha of unknown origin with no test data — especially at a suspiciously low price.
Origin and testing are the two levers you actually control. Japanese matcha from a producer that publishes recent, batch-specific, third-party numbers with the benchmark stated is the version of this decision you can verify for yourself. If your own circumstances put you in one of the higher-caution groups above, that part is a conversation for your doctor.
