How much caffeine is in matcha?

Matcha’s caffeine is not a fixed number, because you drink the leaf instead of an infusion of it — the dose is however many grams of powder went into the bowl. Published measurements put matcha at roughly 19-44mg of caffeine per gram of powder, against 11.3-24.67 mg/g for regular green tea leaf. So the answerable question is not “how much caffeine is in matcha” but “how much powder is in this.”

The 60-70mg anchor for a standard serving comes from the two 2024 clinical trials that assayed their own matcha: one used 2g containing 66.2mg of caffeine, the other 2.7g containing 71.5mg. A café latte is usually made with 2-3g for an 8-12oz drink.

Measuring by volume adds slack of its own. A level teaspoon of matcha is about 1.5-2.0g and a heaping one 2.5-3g, so teaspoon measurement varies by roughly ±50% by weight depending on grind and packing.

The coffee, green tea, black tea and energy drink figures are the FDA’s published estimates; the espresso figure and the upper-band note for black tea come from the International Food Information Council. The FDA publishes a single 30-50mg figure covering green and black tea.

Note: actual caffeine varies based on:

  • How much matcha powder you use — this is by far the biggest variable
  • The grade — ceremonial-grade matcha runs higher in both caffeine and L-theanine per gram than culinary grade, and the gap is larger for L-theanine. The direction is well measured; per-grade milligram figures are not, so treat any brand’s “ceremonial = X mg/g” table with caution
  • Leaf age — the older the leaf, the lower the caffeine
  • How coffee is brewed, on the other side of the comparison

Where the measurements disagree

Published per-gram values for matcha span about an order of magnitude. Four independent datasets overlap in the band the range above is built from, and two 2024 papers report values roughly ten times lower using extraction-based analytical methods rather than a whole-powder assay. No published source reconciles them.

Pulling the other way, ConsumerLab’s 2024 review of 30 green tea products measured 73-119mg of caffeine per cup of matcha, “based on about 1 teaspoon of powder” — above the literature band unless that teaspoon was a heaping 3g. Three products in that review contained less caffeine than their labels claimed.

That is why this article publishes a range with the grams attached rather than a single figure. Averaging the outliers in would produce a number no study supports.

Why Matcha Feels Different

Many people report that matcha gives them energy without the jitters, anxiety, or crash they get from coffee. This is often attributed to L-theanine.

What is L-theanine?

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea leaves. Measured across matcha products it runs roughly 2.5-45mg per gram, which puts a 2g serving anywhere from about 5mg to about 90mg. The Japanese matchas used in the two 2024 clinical trials were near the top of that: 48-50mg per daily dose. Widely repeated “20-50mg per serving” figures describe good Japanese matcha rather than matcha in general.

Two things push it higher:

  • You consume the whole leaf, so no extraction step stands between the powder and the cup — with steeped tea, whatever stays in the leaf goes in the bin
  • Shading before harvest raises L-theanine (it raises caffeine too, and cuts catechins by more than half)

L-theanine is the wide variable here, not caffeine. Caffeine per gram is reasonably predictable; theanine differs several-fold between products, which is a large part of why two matchas can feel unalike.

Which matchas hit the “calm energy” profile

A 2018 analysis tested 76 matcha samples bought in Japan and 67 bought overseas against two criteria: L-theanine above 17 mg/g, and a molar ratio of caffeine plus EGCG to theanine plus arginine below 2. On both criteria together, 32 of the 76 Japanese samples (42%) qualified, and 1 of the 67 bought overseas.

This is often quoted as a “caffeine-to-theanine ratio” across “143 samples.” It is neither — it is a four-compound molar ratio, measured across two separately purchased sets.

How L-theanine Works

A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials — 50 reviewed, 16 pooled — found L-theanine plus caffeine improved attention-switching accuracy and reaction time versus placebo in the first two hours. Mood effects were smaller and their confidence intervals crossed zero; sleep outcomes were inconclusive.

One caveat travels with that evidence: the trials used a median of 82mg of L-theanine, more than many matcha servings deliver, and the authors note that few studies used tea or tea-equivalent doses at all. The combination is sometimes described as “calm energy” or “alert relaxation”; the mechanism is supported, how well it transfers to any particular bowl is not settled.

Important: Caffeine from matcha absorbs just as quickly as caffeine from coffee — about 99% bioavailable within roughly 45 minutes, peaking at 30-60 minutes, with no source-dependent difference reported. The different experience comes from L-theanine, not from slower absorption. Nothing in the pharmacology supports “slow release” or “time-released” caffeine.

Individual Experience Varies

Not everyone feels this difference. Some people are:

  • More caffeine-sensitive and still feel jittery
  • Less affected by L-theanine’s calming effects
  • Affected differently depending on the day

If you’re very caffeine-sensitive, matcha still has caffeine. It may affect you differently from coffee, but the caffeine is still there.

The honest summary is dose-dependent: a 2g matcha sits below a cup of coffee, and a 3-4g preparation overlaps it and can exceed it.

Timing Considerations

Caffeine’s elimination half-life is about 4 hours in healthy adults. Individual variation is wide, and the main reason is genetic: CYP1A2 handles over 90% of caffeine clearance and its activity varies up to 15-fold between people. In pregnancy the half-life roughly doubles, to about 10.5 hours.

General guidelines:

  • Morning matcha suits most people
  • Afternoon matcha depends on your own sensitivity
  • Evening matcha may affect sleep — with a ~4-hour half-life, roughly half the caffeine from a late-afternoon bowl is still with you four hours later, and a quarter of it four hours after that

Daily Reference Points

The FDA cites 400mg a day — about four or five cups of coffee — as an amount not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects in healthy adults, while explicitly noting wide variation in both caffeine sensitivity and metabolism. EFSA reaches the same 400mg figure for habitual daily intake and adds that single doses up to 200mg raise no safety concern for healthy adults.

These are population reference points, not personal limits.

Special Situations

Pregnancy

EFSA and ACOG independently put the pregnancy figure at 200mg a day or less. A 2g serving at around 60-70mg fits inside that with room to spare; a 3-4g preparation at up to 178mg uses most of it before any other caffeine in the day counts. Caffeine also clears more slowly in pregnancy. Your own circumstances are a conversation for your doctor or midwife rather than a general figure.

Caffeine Sensitivity

If you’re highly caffeine-sensitive:

  • Use less powder — the arithmetic is direct, and 1g lands at 19-44mg instead of 38-89mg
  • Drink it with food
  • Account for other caffeine sources that day
  • If you take medication that interacts with caffeine, ask your doctor or pharmacist before making matcha a daily habit

Children

Children metabolize caffeine differently, and EFSA publishes a conservative habitual level of 3mg per kg of body weight per day for children and adolescents. While matcha isn’t generally recommended for young children, small amounts are consumed in Japan. Consult a pediatrician with specific questions.
