Feeling queasy after matcha is common enough that the question gets asked constantly. What nobody can offer is a study of it: there is no trial, no cohort and no case series of matcha and nausea. What follows is what the adjacent evidence supports, with the gap named wherever it matters — which is most places.
What the Evidence Covers
The direct human record for drinking matcha at all is 145 participants across two 2024 trials: 99 adults on a 2g dose daily for 12 months, and 46 adults on 2.7g daily for four weeks. The 12-month trial reported “no cases of a causal relationship between harmful events and matcha consumption.” A 2022 critical review located five matcha trials in humans in total and concluded that “the evidence … is still limited, and conclusions cannot be drawn.”
The nausea evidence comes from somewhere else entirely — trials of green tea catechins in capsules at doses seven to eleven times what a bowl of matcha carries, animal toxicology, and beverage chemistry. That is why the adjustments below are trial and error rather than a protocol.
The Most Common Causes
1. Drinking on an Empty Stomach
This is the best-supported item in the article, and its support is indirect.
In a crossover study of 30 healthy volunteers given single doses of 400, 800 or 1,200mg of EGCG, free EGCG peak plasma concentration was more than 3.5-fold higher after an overnight fast than after a light breakfast. The mild, transient nausea some participants reported “was seen most often at the highest study agent dose (1,200mg epigallocatechin gallate) and in the fasting condition.”
EFSA’s animal record points the same way and is starker. Severe toxicity, mainly in the gastrointestinal tract, appeared in fasted dogs given green tea extract in capsules at doses that were non-toxic to fed dogs; the NOAEL in fasted dogs was 40mg EGCG per kg of body weight per day, ten times lower than in fed dogs. EFSA attributes part of the difference to less binding of catechins to dietary proteins.
Both are capsules, at supplement or toxicological doses. No study has tested food against tea-induced nausea in people. The advice is an extrapolation — a reasonable one, and the only one here with human pharmacokinetic data behind it.
The fix: Eat something first. A few crackers, a banana, a handful of nuts.
2. Too Much Matcha
Dose is arithmetic. The standard serving is 2g — about one level teaspoon — carrying 19-44mg of caffeine per gram and, in the two 2024 trial matchas, 52.7 and 53.0mg of EGCG per gram. Doubling the powder doubles both. Eyeballing a serving adds slack of its own, which is why the amount in the bowl is easy to underestimate.
What is not established is where nausea starts. No source places a threshold at any number of grams. More powder means proportionally more of everything, which is a slope rather than a line to cross.
The fix: Measure by weight rather than by eye, and step the amount down if a serving disagrees with you.
3. Caffeine Sensitivity
A 2g serving carries about 38-89mg of caffeine, most often around 60-70mg. The FDA puts an 8oz cup of brewed coffee at 80-100mg, so a standard serving is roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of a cup of coffee rather than half of one. See how much caffeine is in matcha for the measurement detail.
Caffeine’s own nausea signal sits far above that. Acute toxic effects including nausea and vomiting are described in healthy adults from roughly 1,000mg, with hospitalisation around 2,000mg — eleven to twenty-six times a serving. At matcha doses this is a sensitivity question rather than a dose question, and the variation is large: CYP1A2, the enzyme that dominates caffeine clearance, varies up to 15-fold in activity between people, and the FDA frames its own guidance around exactly that spread.
The fix: Use less powder, and count the day’s other caffeine against the same total.
4. Matcha Grade and Quality
The usual advice is to buy better matcha. The measurements do not support it as a fix for nausea.
Two recent analyses disagree on which grade carries more EGCG. One measured 15 products and put ceremonial matcha highest at 56.57mg per gram, culinary lower, and bagged or gunpowder teas lower still — while reporting that the differences across tea types were not statistically significant. A 2025 comparison found the reverse direction. Both agree that ceremonial grade carries more caffeine (31.45mg per gram against 26.29mg for culinary in the 2025 paper), which is the opposite of what “gentler” would predict if caffeine were the driver. Shading, the practice that distinguishes the leaf, lowers catechins and raises caffeine, so the two levers pull against each other.
No source connects grade, price or freshness to nausea, and no survey quantifies fillers or adulteration in retail matcha. Buying better matcha is a taste decision.
5. Tannins and Astringency
Tannins are what make tea astringent, and astringency is a mouth sensation — protein binding on the tongue rather than anything gastric. The gastric literature on tannins runs the other way: they form a protein-complex pellicle on the mucosa that increases its resistance to chemical and mechanical injury, they inhibit gastric H⁺/K⁺-ATPase, and tannic acid reduces gastric injury dose-dependently in animal ulcer models. No human evidence associates tannins at tea concentrations with stomach upset.
The fix: If astringency is what you dislike, milk or a smaller serving both soften it. As a cause of nausea, tannins are not supported.
The Explanations You’ll See Elsewhere
”Caffeine stimulates stomach acid”
Nearly every source repeats this, and they trace back to one 2017 study — which found the opposite for a drink.
That study gave 13 healthy subjects caffeine at 37.5, 75 or 150mg in 125ml of water by three routes and measured how long the stomach took to reacidify. Encapsulated caffeine, reaching only the gastric receptors, shortened reacidification by about 5 minutes: acid stimulated. Drunk as a solution it prolonged reacidification by about 8 minutes, and sipped and spat, by about 20. The authors state it plainly — oral administration of a caffeine solution delays gastric acid secretion.
Drinking matcha is the drunk-as-a-solution route, and the doses tested bracket what a serving carries. Whatever is going on, stimulated stomach acid from caffeine is not the account of it.
”Catechins irritate the stomach lining”
Not demonstrated at anything like beverage exposure. What exists is a dose-ordered nausea signal in supplement trials: two of 23 women reported mild nausea on 752mg of EGCG in capsules, and a year on 843mg a day raised nausea incidence significantly (P < 0.001) against placebo in 1,075 women — inside an overall adverse-event rate that did not differ from placebo (75.6% against 72.8%). A 2g serving carries 105.3mg.
At the exposures a drinker actually reaches, recent work points the other way: EGCG protected intestinal epithelial cells against cytokine-induced barrier damage, EFSA raises no gastrointestinal concern at the 90-300mg a day EU adults get from green tea infusions, and 300mg a day was recorded as well tolerated across a three-year trial.
One real route does exist between those doses and the symptom. The 752mg capsule dose measurably slowed gastric emptying (36.2% of the meal retained at 30 minutes against 31.34% on placebo, p = 0.008), and delayed emptying is an established way to feel sick. That dose is about seven times a serving, and the authors described the effect as small.
”Whole leaf means several times the catechins”
The direction is real — you swallow the leaf instead of straining it out, and matcha reviews say so. The multiplier usually attached to it is not. USDA composition data put dry green tea leaf at a mean of about 71mg of EGCG per gram and the infusion brewed from 1g of leaf at 70.2mg, so a steep recovers most of what is in the leaf rather than a fifth of it. The analysis of 15 products above found no significant per-gram EGCG difference between matcha, bagged and gunpowder teas, and its single highest product was a gunpowder green tea at 70.22mg per gram.
Variation between products dwarfs the difference between formats: across the EFSA dataset EGCG varied 13-fold between dry leaves and 88-fold between infusions, and one analysis of three commercial matcha powders measured 15.3-16.9mg per gram against the 52.7-53.0mg per gram of the trial matchas. The useful figures are per serving — about 170.8mg of total catechins and 105.3mg of EGCG in the 2g dose of the 12-month trial — not a ratio.
Prevention Strategies
Before You Drink
- Eat first. Even something small. In traditional tea ceremonies, wagashi (sweets) are served before matcha — primarily for taste contrast, but it also means you’re not drinking on an empty stomach.
- Measure carefully. Use a scale or a proper chashaku scoop; measuring by volume varies more than it looks.
- Check your matcha. Stale powder smells flat and tastes dull, which is reason enough to replace it — though catechins and caffeine decrease with storage rather than increase, and nothing links age to nausea.
While Preparing
- Use the standard water temperature rather than boiling water. That is a taste choice: with a steep, hotter water pulls more out of the leaf, but with matcha you swallow the leaf either way, and no source tests matcha temperature against any gastrointestinal outcome.
- Whisk thoroughly. For texture and taste. Nothing connects undissolved clumps to stomach irritation — no measurement, no mechanism, no case series.
- Consider a latte. Tea polyphenols do bind milk caseins, though the authors of that work describe the binding as weak, and no trial has tested milk against tea-induced nausea. What has been measured is that adding up to 50ml of milk does not delay gastric emptying, so it is unlikely to make matters worse.
Timing and Habits
- Don’t make matcha the first thing in the morning — unless you eat something with it.
- Build up gradually. If you’re new to matcha, start with smaller servings.
- Space it out. Caffeine peaks 30-60 minutes after ingestion with a half-life around 4 hours, so splitting the day’s matcha lowers the peak rather than the total.
When Nausea Hits
- Eat something bland — crackers, bread, rice
- Sip water — stay hydrated but don’t chug
- Wait it out — the feeling often passes within an hour or so. No study measures how long it lasts; caffeine’s own peak is 30-60 minutes in, and the supplement-trial nausea was described as mild and transient without being quantified.
- Consider ginger — ginger extract and 6-gingerol non-competitively inhibit the same 5-HT₃ receptors that ondansetron targets. Clinical results for chemotherapy-induced nausea are mixed, and ginger has never been tested against tea- or matcha-related nausea.
Red Flags
Ordinary matcha queasiness is uncomfortable but mild. See a doctor promptly for:
- Severe or prolonged vomiting
- Blood in vomit or stool
- Severe abdominal pain
- Symptoms that persist more than a few hours
- Allergic reactions (swelling, difficulty breathing, hives)
None of these are matcha-specific. They warrant care regardless of what preceded them.
Should You Give Up Matcha?
That is not a question the evidence answers on your behalf, because nobody has followed people who get nauseous from matcha to see what happens next. What can be reported is the surrounding record: the 12-month trial gave 99 adults 2g a day and recorded no harmful events attributed to matcha, and the doses that produced nausea in trials sit seven to eleven times above a serving.
The adjustments worth trying, roughly in order of how well each is supported:
- Always eat something first
- Reduce the serving size
- Add milk or make a latte
- Spread servings across the day rather than taking one large one
If the symptoms persist through all of that, or are severe, talk to your doctor — persistent nausea is a symptom to have looked at, not a verdict on whether a drink suits you.
