Matcha and coffee both provide caffeine, but they feel different to most people. Here’s what the science actually says about why — and where it stops saying anything at all.
Caffeine Content
Matcha’s caffeine is not a fixed number, because you drink the leaf rather than an infusion of it: the dose is however many grams of powder went into the bowl.

The coffee figure is the FDA’s. National authorities disagree about it by more than twofold — published figures for a cup of drip coffee run from about 80mg (FDA) up to about 180mg (Health Canada, for roasted-and-ground filter drip per 237ml). These are not measurement errors; they are different reference preparations, and grounds-to-water ratio is the dominant variable that none of them states. This article uses the FDA figure throughout, as the caffeine article does.
Cold brew is left out on purpose. No national authority publishes a per-serving cold brew figure, and the peer-reviewed measurements are of concentrate — about 1,230mg per litre at a coarse grind — where the caffeine in your cup depends entirely on how much you dilute it.
A 2g matcha sits below a standard cup of coffee, at roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of it on the central estimates. A 3-4g preparation — koicha, or a strong latte — carries 57-178mg and overlaps coffee entirely. The comparison is dose-dependent, so it isn’t worth quoting without the grams attached.
Why Matcha Feels Different
Many people report calmer energy from matcha, without the jitters or crash they get from coffee. That report is consistent enough to take seriously, but it has not been tested: no human trial compares matcha with coffee head to head, and a 2026 review of the two beverages concludes that studies on matcha remain limited. The usual explanation is L-theanine.
What L-theanine Does
L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea. Coffee has none.
Matcha carries more of it per cup than steeped green tea for a structural reason rather than a chemical one: you drink the whole leaf as powder, so no extraction step and no discarded leaf stand between the leaf and the cup. Per gram of dry leaf the picture is far less dramatic — standard sencha measures 18.91mg/g and gyokuro 30.84mg/g, both inside or above matcha’s measured 2.48-44.65mg/g range. The “5x more L-theanine than green tea” figure you’ll see quoted does not survive that comparison.
Here is what the trials found, with the doses they used:
Attention — well supported. A 2025 meta-analysis of 16 randomized trials (484 participants, median doses 82mg L-theanine with 88.74mg caffeine) found the combination improved attention-switching accuracy in the first hour and simple reaction time in the second. A separate 2026 meta-analysis of 31 trials (1,168 participants) found a single 200mg L-theanine dose improved choice reaction time.
Alpha brain waves — unsettled. 50mg of L-theanine increased alpha-band activity in a 2008 EEG study, but that is a two-page conference-supplement article with Unilever-affiliated authors, and a 2025 randomized placebo-controlled attempt at 200mg in 30 adults did not reach statistical significance.
Blood pressure — dose-dependent. L-theanine tended to counteract caffeine-induced blood pressure elevation at 200mg theanine with 250mg caffeine, in 48 participants. At lower, more tea-like doses it does not hold: a 2010 trial at 97mg theanine with 40mg caffeine reported a significant increase in systolic blood pressure.
Jitteriness — not supported. The one trial that tested exactly this gave 250mg caffeine with and without 200mg L-theanine and found that theanine “did not interact with caffeine-induced increases in either alertness or ‘jitteriness’ on state anxiety scales.” The pooled jitteriness figure often quoted alongside this claim compares the combination against placebo, not against caffeine alone — a different question with a different answer.
So the focus half of the usual claim holds, and the calm half does not, at least not yet.
One further gap sits between those trials and your bowl. Measured matcha runs 1.63 to 3.43 parts caffeine to one part L-theanine by weight. Every trial above ran the other way round — 0.41, 0.5, a pooled median of 1.08, and 1.25 in the jitteriness study — and even the trial deliberately set to tea-like ratios ran at 1.5. Matcha is more caffeine-dominant than any of them.
The “Slow Release” Myth
You’ll often hear that matcha caffeine releases slowly over 3-6 hours. This claim lacks pharmacokinetic evidence. Caffeine is about 99% bioavailable within roughly 45 minutes and peaks at 30-60 minutes, with no source-dependent difference reported anywhere in the literature.
The smoother experience, where people get one, is better explained by L-theanine moderating caffeine’s effects than by slower absorption. That is the best available explanation rather than a measured finding — no study has tested it as a matcha-versus-coffee contrast.

The pH figures are laboratory measurements — matcha as a 2.5% aqueous solution across ten commercial products, coffee brewed both hot and cold. Matcha is measurably the less acidic of the two, by about 0.6-0.8 pH units, which is a narrower gap than the usual “near-neutral versus acidic” framing suggests; 5.7 is mildly acidic, not neutral. Hot and cold brew coffee are not distinguishable on pH, contrary to a great deal of marketing. These are measurements, not a digestive claim.
Both beverages can be part of a healthy routine.
Switching from Coffee to Matcha
If you’re considering the switch:
Expect an adjustment period. Most people need 2-4 weeks to appreciate matcha’s flavor, especially if they’re used to bold coffee taste.
Start gradually. Days 1-3: one coffee plus one matcha. Days 4-6: reduce coffee, increase matcha. Days 7+: matcha only if desired.
Budget for the cost difference. Quality matcha costs more than comparable coffee, and prices have risen sharply since 2024 as tencha supply tightened. The multiplier you’ll see quoted has no published per-serving comparison behind it, so treat the direction as reliable and any specific number as an estimate.
Consider a hybrid approach. Morning coffee for immediate alertness plus afternoon matcha works well for many people.
When Coffee May Be Better
Matcha isn’t universally superior. Coffee may be preferable if you:
- Need immediate, intense alertness (shift workers, emergency situations)
- Have a limited budget
- Strongly prefer bold, roasted flavors
- Already tolerate coffee without negative effects
The Honest Take
Matcha provides real benefits for many people, and the L-theanine plus caffeine combination has solid research support for improved focus. The reduced-jitteriness half of that claim does not have the same support, and the drink itself has never been tested against coffee. It’s not magic, and it’s not for everyone.
The best approach: try both and see which works better for your body and lifestyle. Some people thrive switching completely to matcha; others do best with coffee in the morning and matcha in the afternoon; some prefer coffee alone.
